Tamil Maanila Vivasaya Thozhilalar Sangam has appealed to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to enact a law for issuing house site pattas to those living on poramboke lands for more than 10 years, during the silver jubilee celebrations of the Tamil Nadu Assembly on October 29.
A resolution to this effect has been adopted at the body’s administrative members, district presidents, and secretaries meeting held here on Tuesday. Briefing presspersons about the resolutions, R.Mutharasan, general secretary of the sangam said that the Assembly has enacted historical laws in the past. It has a rich history of lively debates and healthy democratic traditions. Laws enacted pertained to welfare of Tamil people not only in the State but also elsewhere in other countries, social justice, and protecting the rights of Tamils living abroad. The issue with respect to house site pattas has been continuing for years despite various measures taken by the government. Legal protection should be given to poor people in this connection and make them live in their own house sites. Building houses at a cost of Rs.3 lakhs with basic amenities should also be included in the law, Mr.Mutharasan said.
The sangam also appealed to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to dismiss Union Ministers S.M.Krishna and Veerappa Moily for making statements contradictory to the stand taken by the Centre on the Cauvery issue. In the recently held Cauvery River Authority meeting, Prime Minister had asked Karnataka to release 9,000 cusecs of water per day. But the two ministers are making statements contradictory to PM’s statement.
Mutharasan said that the sangam thanked the Chief Minister for getting an order from Supreme Court for getting 9,000 cusecs of water.
The sangam also appealed to the State government to pursue the case related to the law to make people belonging to various castes as archakas in the Supreme Court. Though a law had been enacted in the State and youth belonging to various castes have been trained in ‘agama’ practices and rules, they could not be appointed because of the case. K.Thangamani, State president of the association and former MLA, and Chandrakumar, AITUC vice-president, were present.
